Greetings Dr. Friedman,
I have a question to ask: what is PRP and how does it help hair loss? Does it need to be done in conjunction with hair transplant surgery?
Dr. Friedman’s Answer:
PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma can be performed together with hair transplant surgery or by itself. Blood drawn from the patient in special tubes is spun on a special centrifuge which separates the platelets from the red blood cells. The platelets release growth factors which have been shown to regulate the healing cascade, including inflammation and cell proliferation. The best we can expect from PRP injections is a slowing or stopping of hair loss with the possibility of a reversal of miniaturized and fine hair. As excited as we are about this new development, Platelet Rich Plasma will not regrow your hair.
